"He (the artist) makes it his business to extract from fashion whatever element it may contain of poetry within history, distil the external from the transitory." Charles Baudelaire, The Painter of Modern Life

Can Modernity and Fashion Co-exist when Fashion is a statement and Modernity is today, not remembered tomorrow and lingering in the deep shadows hoping for a future? No, Fashion communicates it screams for permanence, while Modernity races to extinction.

I would think. What about you?
Fashion is never permanent. Like modernity, fashion also races to extinction (trend patterns validate this), reinventing itself time and time again, as does modernity. A Fashion may make a statement at any point in time and that statement is clearly modern, something that is desirable and ahead of the market. I smirk at the idea of fashion as permanent. Please tell me when fashion has ever been Permanent???

Fashion is undoubtedly driven by the trend cycle. Fashion does not define one thing, but rather that which is innovative, beautiful, desriable...and should I add Modern? Fashion is many things, but is the antonym of Static.

jenny, it is quite interesting your statement "ANY P0INT in TIME". does this not allude to permanence? has there ever been a time when fashion did not exist? is fashion so specific as to have the possiblity of being nonexistent? i think not. whereas modernity like time is one-directional, a mommentary presence, fashion existed, exist and will always exist (remember any point in time). yes, fashion is never passe. only some ideas regarding fashion.
thank you.

i think jenny is right.. have u heard the quote "Art produces ugly things which frequently become more beautiful with time. Fashion, on the other hand, produces beautiful things which always become ugly with time." by Jean Cocteau... it means that fashion is deeply ralated to modernity bcuz the present generation would find it Good but the generations to come will look at it as something filthy... the same goes with modernism.. for the people of Mideveal age or the ones of ancient period their present was what they called modernism; for us it is our present and so it goes on...
FashiON and Modernism both are something which we bask in and we should enjoy it while we have it!!
